Media, Technology & Human Rights

Media play a key role in a democratic society, responding to the urgent global challenges of our digital age. Modern technologies and digitalisation are increasingly impacting our lives, a process which has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has revealed not only their potential benefits, but also their negative impact on human rights, especially among vulnerable social groups.

Media must bring all its power to bear on recognising, analysing and responding to  human rights abuses which result from the application of digital technologies.

With this in mind, Prague Center for Media Skills has joined a unique project – Promoting Human Rights in the Digital Era: Raising awareness and professional standards in journalism about the impact of modern technologies on human rights.

The 2-year project launched in January 2022 with funding from Norway Funds (No. LP-HRMGSA-017). PCMS will be working as part of a 4-way consortium to introduce the first long-term educational module in the Czech Republic focused on fighting discrimination and human rights abuses by originating and distributing media content produced by specialist journalists covering modern technologies and their use.

The course will engender a series of online training sessions and the publication of professional guidelines. These will be targeted at student journalists at university level and, as part of lifelong training experience, at journalists working in both Czech and Norwegian media.
